Important Note #1: A PDF is not automatically a vector file. A PDF exported from a flattened Photoshop document is still raster on the inside. What matters is the source the file was built from, not the extension on the end of it. Export from Illustrator or InDesign with editing capabilities preserved, and confirm the file contents before submitting it for production.

A vector logo prints just as cleanly at 8 mm on a sample sachet as it does at 200 mm across the front of a stand-up pouch. There’s no resampling, no softening, and no rebuilding the file at a larger size.

There are five checks that separate a vector file from a production file. Most artwork we send back for revision fails on at least one of them, and every one is faster to fix before submission than after.

Start With the Correct Packaging Dieline

A dieline is the template for your pouch. It maps the trim line, the seal areas, the gusset, and any structural features, showing you exactly where artwork can and can’t sit.

Building on the wrong template is one of the more costly mistakes because it isn’t always obvious on screen. Elements that look correctly placed in the layout end up buried inside a seal or sliced through at the trim.

  • Use the dieline that matches your exact finished pouch size
  • Keep the dieline on its own clearly named layer
  • Don’t reposition or resize the template to fit an existing layout

Set Up Colors for the Printing Method

Color setup depends entirely on which press your job runs on, and this is where generic design advice tends to go wrong. Getting it wrong won’t stop the job, but it will shift your colors in ways you never approved.

Digital printing

  • Pantone colors are manually converted to CMYK during prepress
  • Flag any critical brand-color matches before the job starts

Rotogravure printing

Two rules apply on either press. Set solid black text to 100% K rather than a rich CMYK black, because it prints sharper and avoids registration problems on small type. And never submit production artwork in RGB, which is a screen color space and will shift on conversion.

Outline Fonts Before Submission

Outlining converts your text into vector shapes, so the type reproduces exactly as designed no matter which fonts are installed on the machine that opens the file. Without it, a missing font is silently substituted and your headline arrives in something else entirely.

In Illustrator, select all and press Ctrl + Shift + O.

Important Note #2: Archive an editable copy before you outline. Once text is converted to outlines it cannot be edited again. A single typo caught at proof stage means rebuilding the layout from scratch. Use the standard naming convention so both versions stay clear: keep Filename.ai with live text, and submit Filename-OL.ai outlined.

Include Linked Images and Graphics

Placed images sit outside the artwork file as links rather than inside it. If those links don’t travel with the file, the elements simply aren’t there when it’s opened, and the gap isn’t always caught until the proof stage.

Make sure the following are packaged or embedded before you send anything:

  • Product photography
  • UPC and barcode artwork
  • Background textures and pattern files
  • Any other linked or placed image

Check Bleed, Trim, and Safe Areas

Cutting and sealing are never perfectly precise, so your layout has to allow for a small amount of movement. These three boundaries are what make that tolerance possible.

  • Bleed — artwork extending beyond the finished trim edge, so no white slivers appear if the cut shifts
  • Trim line — where the package artwork is intended to be cut
  • Safe area — the space inside the trim where important elements should remain

Which File Formats Are Best for Print-Ready Packaging Artwork?

Not every format we accept is a format we recommend, and the distinction matters more than most people expect. AI and EPS are preferred because they preserve complete vector data and stay fully editable in prepress. Other formats are workable under certain conditions, and a couple are frequently misunderstood.

Here’s how each one performs for packaging artwork.

AI

  • Native Adobe Illustrator artwork
  • Highly editable, with all paths, layers, and objects intact
  • Preferred format for vector packaging artwork

EPS

  • Widely compatible vector format that opens across virtually all design software
  • Especially useful for logos and illustrations supplied by a third party
  • Also preferred for submission

Layered PDF

  • Preserves editable vector information when exported correctly
  • Useful for transferring a complete, fully assembled layout
  • Must remain properly layered, not flattened on export

SVG

  • A true scalable vector format
  • Useful for individual vector assets like logos and icons
  • Confirm production requirements before using it as your final packaging file

What About PSD Files?

PSD files are accepted in certain workflows, but Photoshop is raster-based software. A PSD is not a vector format, regardless of how the artwork inside it was created, and it shouldn’t be treated as one.

If you’re supplying a PSD, keep all layers intact and don’t flatten the file. Flattening removes any ability to adjust individual elements during prepress, which is usually the point at which small problems become expensive ones.

When Should You Use Raster Images Instead?

Vector isn’t the right answer for everything, and treating it as universal creates its own problems. Photography is raster by nature, and running a product shot through an auto-trace produces something that looks like a bad screen print rather than a photograph.

Raster is genuinely the correct choice for:

  • Product photography
  • Complex photographic imagery
  • Realistic textures and materials
  • Detailed photo effects, shadows, and gradients

Can Vector and Raster Graphics Be Used Together?

Yes, and most professional packaging is built exactly this way. The two formats aren’t alternatives so much as different tools used in the same document, each handling the content it’s suited to.

A typical pouch layout combines:

  • A vector logo
  • Vector typography and legal copy
  • Vector icons and certification marks
  • A raster product photograph or background image

Everything sits in one vector document, with the raster elements placed rather than pasted in.

What Resolution Should Raster Images Be?

Every raster element on a printed pouch needs to be at least 300 dpi at 100% of its final size. That last part is where most files fail, because resolution is only meaningful relative to how large the image will actually print.

A photo that’s 300 dpi at 2 inches drops to 75 dpi when you stretch it across 8 inches of packaging. Always check the resolution at the size the image appears on the finished pouch, not the size it was originally supplied at.

Common Artwork Mistakes to Avoid Before Printing

Most artwork problems aren’t creative failures. They’re small setup oversights that nobody notices until the file is already in production, at which point correcting them costs time that wasn’t in the schedule.

  1. Using a low-resolution JPG or PNG logo — enlarging it to packaging size causes visible pixelation. Ask your designer for the original AI or EPS.
  2. Designing the entire package in RGB — RGB is a screen color space, and production artwork shouldn’t be built in it.
  3. Forgetting to outline fonts — creates font compatibility issues and silent substitutions.
  4. Missing linked images or assets — elements disappear when the artwork is opened elsewhere.
  5. Flattening editable files too early — makes production adjustments difficult or impossible.
  6. Ignoring the dieline — leads to incorrect positioning around seals, trims, and package features.
  7. Placing important elements too close to the trim — text, photos, and barcodes all need adequate safe space.
  8. Using low-resolution photographs — raster elements must meet 300 dpi at their actual print size.
